Nobody actually agrees on why the bottom waistcoat button is left undone. Tailoring folklore credits Edward VII, a magazine reference to “the King’s unfastened vest button” appears as early as 1908, though photographs mostly show him buttoned up. Others trace it to Eton College’s exclusive “Pop” society in the late 1800s. What’s certain is that a properly fitted waistcoat shouldn’t need the convention to look right in the first place. Dandylion Style hand-tailors bespoke waistcoats in West Sussex from our Ardingly studio. Enquire for pricing.

A conversation about how the waistcoat will be worn, under a jacket for structure, or standalone with a shirt and trousers. Meet Igor at our Ardingly studio, or we'll travel to you across Sussex.
Wool, tweed, silk and linen are offered depending on season and occasion, chosen to either match or deliberately contrast a jacket's cloth.
Lapel style, pocket detail and back fastening are all agreed at consultation, along with button count, the detail every waistcoat is judged on, whether or not the bottom one gets used.
A meticulous measuring session captures chest and waist specifically as they sit when seated, not just standing, since a waistcoat lives or dies on how it behaves once you sit down.
Hand-stitched with careful attention to waist suppression, so the waistcoat sits flat against the body without gaping at the sides, whether the bottom button is fastened or not.
One to two fittings confirm chest and waist fit before completion. Once it's right, it's yours, sitting close to the body by design, not by the convention of a button left undone to hide a looser fit.
Every two-piece suit is cut and fitted personally by Igor at the Ardingly studio, using British cloth chosen for how you'll actually wear it.

I have had the pleasure of working with Igor on several projects: reinventing a Ted Baker plain black coat with hot pink herringbone tweed (yes it’s as fabulous as it sounds); making a duplicate of an existing summer skirt but with bolder colours and heavier weight fabric; relining a plain H&M blazer to make it a statement piece; and various alterations and upgrades of Etsy vintage purchases. And there is always a little suggestion for “detail” here and there which really makes the difference. He is very client focused, open to new ideas, and his professionalism and the quality of work is to a very high standard, as it should be. He has a client base flung far and wide (UK, Europe, EMEA) so it’s always best to get in touch in advance to arrange appointment. And the tea and cake is always good.Posted on Google![]()

Igor has made a dress for my wife Wendy, and a three peice suit for myself, for our visit to the Buckingham Palace Garden Party. From our first phone call and subsequent visits to his shop, it was an amazing experience. He made my wife feel relaxed and confident that the dress would be what she wanted. My suit was a perfect fit, complete with matching tie and pocket square, the two shirts he made are a perfect fit. We both cannot thank Igor enough for a fantastic experience. Would thoroughly recommend him to anybody who wants bespoke tailor made suit or dress.Posted on Google![]()

My experience with Igor was first class and I would thoroughly recommend him to anyone looking to buy a bespoke suit. I have gone into more detail on my experience below. I was looking for a 3 piece suit for my wedding day and was originally looking to buy one off the rack, but hadn’t been able to find one that I was happy with the fit. I met Igor and told him what I was looking for and he very quickly narrowed down some materials for me and my partner to choose from that were within our budget. We went with the 3 piece suit, but Igor also made us a tie and pocket square out the same material as the waistcoat and also tailored a shirt I bought so that it fit me better. This was an unexpected benefit and it’s the best a shirt has fit me. I went in to see Igor a few times afterwards to check the fit of the suit and it was always a great experience. I don’t usually enjoy buying clothes but it was a pleasure dealing with Igor and I really enjoyed it. We’d just had out first child and Igor was so nice to him and accommodating of my now wife whilst she was feeding him etc. When I tried the suit on for the final time, I was so happy with what Igor had created. He bagged everything I’d need for the day in the suit bag and having a suit that looked brilliant and was made to make me look my best made the experience of having photos and videos taken that much better, I look forward to working with Igor again.Posted on Google![]()

Absolutely fabulous and highly recommended. I approached Igor for a bespoke 3 piece for my destination wedding and he did not disappoint. Consistent and reliable communication, even at weekends. He worked tirelessly to complete my suit for the deadline (with a number of alterations) and the result was immaculate finish, I could not have been more pleased. Thank you Igor!Posted on Google![]()

Well what can I say other than a wonderful experience! I needed a suit for my best friends wedding and as the Best Man decided to go all out as I just didn't have a suit that had ever worked for me. I showed Igor the styles I had in mind and we picked the fabrics. We discussed things and then he let loose. Igor is not only an amazingly creative person, but an extremely personable character. The prices might be slightly high for some, and I get that, but in all honesty you can see where the money goes. This is tailor made, not like the off the peg junk. I have a 50' chest and I'm only 5ft 10 with a 14 inch drop. It you're athletically built, off the peg suits just don't work. This whole experience was amazing and at the end of it I feel I have made a life long friend as well. Just treat yourself peeps and speak to Igor. Thank you, thank you, thank you Igor, you're a star !!!!!Posted on Google![]()

Nobody's entirely sure. Theories range from Edward VII, dandies wearing two waistcoats at once, riding practicality, to Eton College's "Pop" society in the late 19th century. It's one of tailoring's genuine unsettled questions.
No. A well-fitted bespoke waistcoat sits flat through the chest and waist with the bottom button fastened or not, since it's cut to your measurements rather than relying on convention to disguise a looser fit.
Cost depends on cloth choice, wool and tweed generally cost less than silk. Igor gives an exact price once cloth and detailing are agreed at your Ardingly consultation.
Yes, a waistcoat works as a standalone piece with trousers and a shirt, not only as part of a two- or three-piece suit. Cloth and colour can be chosen independently in that case.
Close to the body with no gap at the sides and no pull across the chest when you sit down. This is why Igor measures and fits with sitting posture specifically in mind, not just standing.
